Catch up to Wednesday June 7

We've been working our way through a Civics Learning Unit ...  a unit to get my students ready to do Civics online or in class next semester.

I really do recommend that my students do Civics/Careers online. It's the best way to move forward, in my humble opinion.

In any case, we have some time to work on it in class and we are learning cool stuff that should get everyone ready for the Civics course.

And we're working on it together, in class.

Thursday May 24

We are still moving forward with the Blended Learning Unit. The link is here. We are up to BLU A4 today.

Seems we can do this!

Woo!

May 23

Ok ... we have a good move forward.

The link for the Blended Learning Unit is here.

Please click on it.

Tuesday and Wednesday May 17

Tuesday and Wednesday were both lightly attended classes, as students were away for a variety of school functions and events.

We worked steadily on the Culminating Activites on both days.

Please keep working on this 30% piece of your final mark!

Almost done!

Monday May 15

Today we worked on Part B of the Culminating Activity for this course.

Most did a bang up job of it - I'm looking forward to reading them!

For a bit of fun, we watched a bit of this:

Friday May 12

So, I'm not sure what happened to the last few posts.

Meh - Its all good.

We got through to Part B of the Culminating Activity in this class today. We also watched this guy:

You can do it!

Tuesday May 9

We finished the film study of Seven Years in Tibet.

Tomorrow, we'll get on to something ... more practical.

Still, what a film!

Monday May 8

So we kept on the current study of Seven Years in Tibet.

What a great film.

Onwards!

Friday May 5

I thought I might be away today, so it was going to be a fairly straight forward class.

As it turned out, I was there in the class today; we did do a study of Seven Years in Tibet. We are going to finish it on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Monday May 1

We made it to May!

Well, we started U4A1 today - which was a powerpoint we went through together and we chatted about Finding a (summer) Job.

We brought back the Networking assignment where we listed the people around us that might be able to help find a job, too.

The assignment was to: 1) find three job opportunities. 2) Write in an informal manner for each one how your skills would make you suited for the job.

We also chatted about this famous Canadian painting by Alec Colville:

Thursday April 27

We did an activity on Safety and the Law around employment law in this class over the last two days.

Nothing exciting, not really.

U3A13

Here is the link for today: It's about starting a business.

After you work through the quiz, I'd like you to respond in an informal piece of writing of about 150 words in length about whether or not you'd like to work for yourselves. Please label this piece of writing "U3A14"

Click on the link, not the picture ..... ugh ....

Monday April 24

We got a little side tracked there on Friday and didn't get to the last video about "Trends"

We're going to watch that one, then get the assignment for that one ... U3A11 ... and then get today's work.

It's an article from the Globe and Mail about People Skills.

It's all good.

Friday April 21

We watched this video today ... and answered a few quick questions about the trends that have happened since 1993.

Whoa, that is a long time. Here are the questions.

Thursday April 20

So today in class we are going to be working through a rather ... old ... presentation on Work Habits.

You are going to be doing U3A8 together and ... assessing yourself.

After we finish together, you are going to do the following:

Five "Hello Statements" about your work habits. Statements that make you think or point out the obvious about what you learned from going through the self-assessment with the teacher.

Wednesday April 19

Well, we got through a discussion of After secondary school destinations ... and THEN my students told me they'd already done it ...

ah well.

I then found the next thing for them ... and here is the link.

Take some time, read the destinations, and get them done!

Tuesday April 18

Happy Easter everyone!

Today we did U3A4c ... otherwise known as "Learning outside of the regular schoolroom" ...

We had a short little set of questions on it. We did talk a lot more than we normally do, but it was all good.

Wed and Thurs April 13

These days we watched and finished the film October Sky and got the questions done.

After that, we helped each other get things done.

Tuesday April 11

I apologise for not keeping this blog updated.

We are currently watching October Sky as a chance to see how hobbies and things outside of regular classes can become a career.

The questions for this are on this link.

Monday and Tuesday April 4

Today we'll be finishing off the article we started yesterday about many ways to pay for Post-Secondary Education.

It was a topic that was brought up by one of the students and I wanted to make sure that we covered it.

After that, we're going to watch a movie based on a true story called Catch me if you can.

The questions for it are here

Tuesday March 28

We started with finishing off the U3A1b handout on Matthew. The link to the passage is on the right hand side of the blog, under links for Unit 3.

We also got the handout for "Exploration of Opportunities" after talking about using MyBlueprint.

Finally, I was watching heads bob up and down and so I played this video for the class.

Monday March 27

Today was about Networking and why people, especially people who own their own businesses, rely on the people around them to help with hiring workers.

I asked students to bring together a "Network" of their own. I'll call it U3A1a ... which is basically the "graphic organiser" type of

Then we did U3A1, which was about Teamwork.

Friday March 24

We had a fairly laid back day today.

We talked again about our resumes...

See below for an example we got from a local college "resume help" program

Tomorrow ... networking!

Wednesday March 8

I will do another post with the Laughing subway video for the assignment we were working on yesterday...

In any case, if we complete the assignment we will work on this:

After reading each scenario, consider the following questions and record the ideas of the group members:
1. How would you cope with this situation?
2. What other ways could you use to deal with this situation?
3. Which way would reduce your stress?
4. To whom would you talk about this problem?

Scenario 1

Your parent just lost his/her job. A school trip you planned to go on is just a month away, but your parent said the money for the trip will now be used to pay bills. A few good friends are also going on this trip and you don’t want to be embarrassed by telling the truth about why you can’t go on the trip.

Scenario 2

You have failed two of four subjects on your mid-term report card. You just received this report today, and you do not want to take it home to show your parents. You are disappointed in yourself.

Scenario 3

You have been grounded because you stayed out on a school evening well past the time you were supposed to be home. But there is a school dance this coming Friday evening that you wanted to attend, but now cannot go to because of being grounded.

Thursday and Friday March 2 and 3

Hey everyone. I want to say I am sorry for not posting on this blog Thursday. Man, it happens.

Here is what we need to work on today:

U2A5 Graphing and Reading Graphic Information

Graphs are used to visually represent information. Graphs emphasise material, and graphs can present material in a smaller space and with less repetition than words alone.

Before answering any questions about the information in a graph, try to understand the basic elements of the graph.

Establish what type of graph you are studying (for example is it a bar graph, a line graph, or a circle or pie graph?).

Be certain to read the title of the graph and, from the title, learn information about the graph.

Read the labels on each line.

Make yourself familiar with the units in the graph. For example, a graph may be speaking about percentages, or kilogrammes, or dollars, or months, or a combination of these.Read the legend (if there is one).

Some questions about data can be answered by stating a fact directly from the graph. To answer these types of questions, study the graph carefully and gather information from it.

Other questions about the graph may require you to interpret information by identifying relationships and trends within the graph.

      1. So when reading the article, were there any words you didn’t understand? Could you work out what they meant when you looked at the entire sentence or did you just ask the teacher what they word(s) meant?
2.     How often would you take notes on your phone? Why wouldn’t you take notes on your phone?
3.     So, after reading the article if you had to choose from one of the apps described, which one would you use to get your homework done?
       4. Is there one of the apps that you would hate to use?

March 1

Here we are ... March 1.

Here's the link about the thing we are working on today.

Tuesday Feb 28

Well, so far, I'll post the link to the exit ticket for the day.

And I'm going to have to re-commit to keeping this blog updated!

Tuesday Feb 21

Finished up the Keilburger/Beatitudes Assignment- all handed in, great stuff!

Began working on U1A9 and 9 (Statement starters and Brain puzzle). Still waiting on a few more, but great work!

Thursday Feb 16

Began working on Beatitudes/Craig Keilburger assignment, even with the dodgy wifi! Great work today!

Wed Feb 15

Today in class we talked about what type of people we want to be in both school and work.

We then moved onto talking about transferable skills. Everyone began to reflect on how certain transferable skills come up in life and in school for their assignment, and most completed it before the end of class.

Monday and Tuesday Feb 14th

Well, I'm not there. I'm off for a while, as I had emergency surgery on Sunday.

I'm ok, at home and recovering nicely. I should be back in a few weeks.

I hear from Miss Perino that you guys worked on your weekly schedules today. That's awesome.

Keep that up!

Friday Feb 10

We are going to start out today with reading this article.

We're going to think about it and do some writing about it, too.

Yes, it's going to be due after about 20 minutes. As soon as you get it done, get it in to me.

Then we are going to move on to talking about your Myer-Briggs U1A2 assignment, and then talk about setting up a schedule for yourself.

Thursday Feb 9

Well, today was a pretty relaxing day - we had the windows open and the sunshine in from outside to light up the room.

All was good.

We took the "Online Myers-Briggs Free assessment" (see link under the Unit One Links on the right side of the blog) ... the teacher ended up being "INFI". What was particularly funny was that under recommended careers, the teacher got "High school teacher" recommended to them.

Classic.

We then had three questions to answer based on the Personality types quiz ... and I googled who was a "famous INFJ":

I'm better at rugby than Johnny Depp.

Ok, well, if you get those things done, take a peek at the next online assessment for U1A3.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday was a snow day ... Wednesday was a day when we worked on the next part of the first activity, called New Challenges and Table.

It was quite a day ... nice and calm.

We also took a peek at this:

All done by hand!

Monday Feb 6

Well, at the end of class, we were working on the "U1A1 New Firsts" handout. Well, we started it.

We had to watch some of Bruce Lee in class, too. Not that we are going to be doing that very often, just today.

In any case, we had an assignment to email in to the teacher at ChesserHandin1 at gmail  dot com, too.

All is good!

Feb 6 - Welcome!

Hey there!

We are in class together and I'm showing this off to you.

This will be a place for us to work on together and make it helpful for our needs.

I will be posting a lot of helpful stuff for the class on this site.
